The Everyday Knit Hat

Materials

  • Yarn: Worsted Weight (~100g)
  • Needles: Circular needles in the size needed to match your gauge (e.g, US 7 / 4.5mm) plus DPNs or a long cable for Magic Loop during crown decreases
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, 1 stitch marker, measuring tape

Instructions

1. Cast On: Using your circular needles, cast on exactly 84 stitches. Place marker for beginning of round, and join to work in the round.

2. Brim (Ribbing): Work in [K1, P1] ribbing for a couple inches.

3. Body: Knit in stockinette stitch (or the stitch pattern of your swatch) until your desired hat height.

4. Crown Decreases: Repeat [K2, K2tog] around for the first decrease round. Knit one plain round. Repeat [K1, K2tog] around for the second decrease round. Knit one plain round. Then repeat [K2tog] around until a total of ~8-18 stitches remain on your needles.

5. Finishing: Cut yarn leaving a 6-8 inch tail. Thread through remaining live stitches with the tapestry needle, pull tight to secure, weave in all ends, and gently wash and lay flat to dry!
